MOT Type 1 Sub-base
MOT Type 1 is a crushed stone sub-base, graded from 31.5 mm (often sold as 40 mm) down to dust, that compacts into a firm, free-draining layer under driveways, patios, paths and floor slabs.
We supply MOT Type 1 sub-base and scalpings in bulk bags, and can price loose loads for bigger areas where access allows. Tell us the area and the depth you are building up and we will work out the tonnage.

Choosing MOT Type 1
How deep?
Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.
Compaction
Lay and compact in layers with a plate compactor. Allow extra material because it compacts down.
Virgin or recycled?
Recycled Type 1 can be a good option where it meets the specification; ask what your project or local authority requires.
How it arrives on site
Bulk bags are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; very large quantities can be priced as loose tipped loads where access allows. We agree the drop point and offload method when we price your order. Read more about how delivery works.
How much do you need?
A 6 × 4 m area at 150 mm compacted is 3.6 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 8.3 tonnes, or around 10 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator
MOT Type 1 Sub-base: questions
How much MOT Type 1 do I need?
Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre. At 100 mm deep, a tonne covers roughly 4.5 square metres.
How deep should a driveway sub-base be?
Around 150 mm of compacted MOT Type 1 is common for domestic drives on firm ground; soft ground or heavier vehicles need more. Follow your installer or the paving maker's guidance.
What is the difference between Type 1 and scalpings?
Type 1 is graded to a specification so it compacts into a strong, stable layer. Scalpings are less controlled and suit less demanding areas.
Does Type 1 drain?
Type 1 is reasonably free-draining when compacted, which is one reason it is used under drives and patios.
Can you tip it loose?
For larger quantities we can price a loose tipped load if the lorry can reach and there is space to tip.
