How much MOT Type 1 do I need?

Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes of MOT Type 1 per cubic metre; at 100 mm deep one tonne covers roughly 4.5 square metres.

The calculation

  1. Measure the area in square metres.
  2. Choose the compacted depth in metres (100 mm is 0.1 m).
  3. Area × depth = cubic metres.
  4. Cubic metres × 2.1 = tonnes, plus about 10 percent for compaction and levels.

Example: a 30 m² patio at 100 mm is 3 m³, which is about 6.3 tonnes plus 10 percent, so order around 7 tonnes.

Typical depths

Paths and patios commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base. Domestic driveways often use 150 mm or more. Soft or clay ground and heavier vehicles need more; follow your installer's or the paving manufacturer's guidance.

Laying it

Lay in layers no thicker than the compactor can handle, typically 50 to 100 mm, and compact each layer with a plate compactor before adding the next.

Drives and planning

In England, paving more than 5 m² of a front garden needs planning permission unless the surface is permeable or water drains to a lawn or border. The Planning Portal explains the rules.

How deep should a driveway sub-base be?

Around 150 mm of compacted MOT Type 1 is common for domestic drives on firm ground; soft ground or heavier vehicles need more. Follow your installer or the paving maker's guidance.

How much ballast for a cubic metre of concrete?

Roughly 2 to 2.2 tonnes of all-in ballast with about 15 bags of cement at a 1:5 mix. Our concrete calculator works out your slab or footing.
