Choosing insulation and drylining

Plasterboard

Plasterboard (drywall) is a gypsum core faced with paper, fixed to timber or metal framing to form walls and ceilings; the standard board is 2400 × 1200 mm in 9.5, 12.5 or 15 mm. More about plasterboard.

PIR Insulation Boards

PIR (polyisocyanurate) insulation boards are rigid foam boards with foil facings that give a lot of insulation for their thickness, used in floors, walls, pitched and flat roofs. More about PIR insulation boards.

Mineral Wool Insulation

Mineral wool is glass or stone fibre insulation supplied as rolls, batts and slabs; it insulates, absorbs sound and most products are non-combustible. More about mineral wool insulation.

Plaster & Beads

Gypsum plasters are bagged powders mixed with water: undercoats such as bonding and hardwall build up the surface, and finish coats such as multi-finish and board finish give the smooth final skim. More about plaster.

Metal Stud & Ceiling Systems

Metal stud systems are light galvanised steel sections (studs, tracks and channels) that form partitions and suspended plasterboard ceilings as an alternative to timber. More about metal studs and ceiling sections.

Insulation & Drylining: questions

How many plasterboards do I need?

Divide the wall or ceiling area by 2.88 m² (one 2400 × 1200 sheet) and add about 10 percent for cutting. Our plasterboard calculator also gives the screws.

How thick should PIR insulation be?

It depends on where it goes and the U-value required. Pitched roofs often need 100 mm or more between and under rafters; floors and walls vary. Use the maker's U-value tables or ask your designer.

How thick should loft insulation be?

270 mm in total is the common recommendation, usually as 100 mm between the joists and 170 mm across them.

What is the difference between multi-finish and board finish?

Board finish is designed for skimming plasterboard. Multi-finish works on plasterboard and on undercoat plasters, so it is the more flexible choice.

What is an MF ceiling?

A suspended plasterboard ceiling built from steel channels hung from the structure above, used to create a flat ceiling below an uneven soffit or to hide services.
