Choosing cement and aggregates

Cement

Cement is the grey powder that binds sand and aggregate into mortar and concrete; in the UK it is mostly sold as general-purpose Portland cement in 25 kg bags. More about cement.

Building & Sharp Sand

Building sand (soft sand) is a fine sand for bricklaying mortar, while sharp sand is coarser and is used for concrete, screeds and paving beds. More about sand.

Ballast & Gravel

Ballast (all-in ballast) is a mixed sand and gravel aggregate used with cement to make concrete; gravel and shingle are graded stones used for drainage, bedding and decoration. More about ballast and gravel.

MOT Type 1 Sub-base

MOT Type 1 is a crushed stone sub-base, graded from 31.5 mm (often sold as 40 mm) down to dust, that compacts into a firm, free-draining layer under driveways, patios, paths and floor slabs. More about MOT Type 1.

Bagged Concrete & Mortar Mixes

Bagged mixes are pre-blended dry concrete, mortar or screed that only need water, saving you batching sand, aggregate and cement on site. More about bagged concrete and mortar.

Cement & Aggregates: questions

How many bags of cement for 1,000 bricks?

At a 1:4 mortar mix, about 8 to 9 bags of 25 kg cement and roughly 1 tonne of building sand, allowing for waste.

What is the difference between building sand and sharp sand?

Building (soft) sand is fine and makes smooth mortar for laying bricks. Sharp sand is coarser, drains better and is used in concrete, screeds and paving beds.

How much ballast for a cubic metre of concrete?

Roughly 2 to 2.2 tonnes of all-in ballast with about 15 bags of cement at a 1:5 mix. Our concrete calculator works out your slab or footing.

How much MOT Type 1 do I need?

Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre. At 100 mm deep, a tonne covers roughly 4.5 square metres.

How many bags of post mix per post?

Usually one or two 20 kg bags per standard fence post, depending on the hole size. The bag will state the recommended amount.
