Treated Carcassing Timber
Carcassing timber is strength-graded, sawn softwood used for the structural frame of a building, such as floor joists, rafters, ceiling joists and stud walls. More about carcassing timber.
CLS Studwork Timber
CLS (Canadian Lumber Standard) timber is kiln-dried, planed softwood with rounded edges, sized at 38 × 63 mm and 38 × 89 mm, used mainly for internal stud walls. More about CLS timber.
Planed Timber & Mouldings
Planed timber, often called PAR (planed all round), is softwood machined smooth on all four faces for joinery, trim and anything that will be seen. More about planed timber.
Plywood
Plywood is a sheet material made from thin layers of wood veneer glued with the grain at right angles, which makes it strong and stable; the standard sheet is 2440 × 1220 mm. More about plywood.
OSB, MDF & Chipboard
OSB, MDF and chipboard are engineered wood panels: OSB (oriented strand board) for structural sheathing and decking, MDF for smooth joinery, and chipboard for floor decking and furniture. More about OSB, MDF and chipboard.

Timber & Sheets: questions
What does C16 and C24 mean?
They are strength classes under BS EN 338. C24 timber is stronger and stiffer than C16, which lets it span further for the same size.
What does CLS stand for?
Canadian Lumber Standard. It refers to the way the timber is dried, planed and finished with rounded edges.
What does PAR mean?
Planed all round: the timber has been machined smooth on all four faces.
What size is a sheet of plywood?
The standard sheet is 2440 × 1220 mm, also known as 8 × 4 feet.
What is OSB3?
OSB3 is oriented strand board graded for load-bearing use in humid conditions under BS EN 300. It is the common grade for floors, roofs and sheathing.
