Choosing building materials

Bricks

Bricks are fired clay or concrete masonry units; the UK standard size is 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm, which lays at about 60 bricks per square metre of single-skin wall. More about bricks.

Concrete & Aircrete Blocks

Concrete blocks are large masonry units, normally 440 × 215 mm on face, that lay at about 10 blocks per square metre; they come as dense aggregate, lightweight aggregate or aircrete (aerated) blocks. More about concrete blocks.

Steel & Concrete Lintels

A lintel is a beam that carries the masonry over a door or window opening; most UK houses use galvanised steel cavity lintels or prestressed concrete lintels. More about lintels.

Roofing Materials

Roofing materials are the tiles or slates, battens, underlay membranes and fixings that make up a pitched roof covering, plus the flat-roof materials for smaller roofs. More about roofing materials.

Underground Drainage

Underground drainage is the system of plastic pipes, bends, junctions and inspection chambers that carries foul and surface water away from a building, most often in 110 mm PVC-U pipe. More about drainage.

Damp Proofing & Membranes

Damp proofing materials stop moisture rising or passing through a building: a damp-proof course (DPC) in the walls and a damp-proof membrane (DPM) under the floor. More about damp proofing.

Building Materials: questions

How many bricks are in a square metre?

With standard 215 × 65 mm bricks and 10 mm mortar joints you need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall and about 120 for a one-brick-thick wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts and breakages.

How many blocks per square metre?

Standard 440 × 215 mm blocks with 10 mm joints lay at about 10 blocks per square metre of wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts.

How long should a lintel be?

The clear opening plus the end bearing at each side, typically at least 150 mm per end. Check the manufacturer's table for your lintel.

How many roof tiles do I need?

It depends on the tile and its gauge (the spacing of the battens). Manufacturers quote tiles per square metre for each product; send us the roof area and the tile and we will work it out with ridge, hip and verge pieces.

What size drainage pipe do I need?

110 mm is the standard size for most domestic underground foul and surface water drains; 160 mm is used for larger runs. Your design or building control will confirm.

What is the difference between DPC and DPM?

DPC is a strip built into walls to stop damp rising through the masonry. DPM is a sheet laid under a concrete floor slab. They are lapped together so there is no gap.
