Planed Timber & Mouldings

Planed timber, often called PAR (planed all round), is softwood machined smooth on all four faces for joinery, trim and anything that will be seen.

We supply PAR softwood in common sections, plus skirting, architrave, door linings, window boards and stop beads in standard profiles. Tell us the sections and lengths, or the profile you need to match.

Choosing planed timber

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

Matching old profiles

Bring an offcut or a clear profile photo with measurements and we will look for the closest current profile.

How it arrives on site

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. We agree the drop point and offload method when we price your order. Read more about how delivery works.

How much do you need?

A 3.8 × 3.6 m room with one door has about 14 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 15.4 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Planed Timber & Mouldings: questions

What does PAR mean?

Planed all round: the timber has been machined smooth on all four faces.

Why is my 2 × 4 smaller than 2 × 4 inches?

Timber is often named by its sawn size before planing. Once planed, it finishes smaller, so a nominal 2 × 4 is roughly 44 × 94 mm or less.

Do you sell MDF skirting?

Yes, primed MDF skirting and architrave in common profiles, alongside softwood.

Can you match an old skirting profile?

We can look for the closest current profile. Exact matches for old or bespoke profiles may need machining to order.

How should I store planed timber?

Flat, off the ground and inside if possible, so it does not take on moisture and move before fitting.
