A 3.8 × 4 m room with one door has about 14.8 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 16.3 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Timber is often named by its sawn size before planing. Once planed, it finishes smaller, so a nominal 2 × 4 is roughly 44 × 94 mm or less.
