Choosing adhesives and sealants

Which sealant where?

Use sanitary silicone in wet areas, low-modulus sealant around frames that move, and paintable caulk on trims to be decorated.

Fire-stopping

Ordinary foam is not a fire stop. Where a fire seal is required use a tested fire-rated product and install it as tested.

Ventilation

Some adhesives and foams give off fumes while curing; use them in a ventilated space.

How much do you need?

Sealing round 5 windows of about 1.2 × 1.2 m is roughly 24 m of joint. A 310 ml cartridge runs about 3 m of a 10 × 10 mm bead, so allow 8 cartridges of frame sealant.

Can I paint over silicone?

Generally no. Use a paintable decorators' caulk if the joint will be painted.

What sealant for windows?

A low-modulus frame sealant that stays flexible as the frame moves.

Is expanding foam fire rated?

Only fire-rated foams that have been tested are. Standard foam is not a fire stop.

What is grab adhesive used for?

Fixing skirting, trims, boards and other items without mechanical fixings, where the surfaces suit.

How long does silicone take to cure?

Usually skins in minutes and cures over a day or more, depending on thickness and temperature. Check the cartridge.
