Estimating your bricks

Take a garden wall in Yate 12 m long and 0.9 m high: 10.8 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 681 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.64 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Picking the right product

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Getting bricks onto your Yate site

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Yate is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
  • On busy streets in Yate, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
  • Deliveries are to the kerb, drive or within crane reach; ask if materials need to go further.

Bricks in Yate: questions

Do you sell bricks in small quantities?

We price whole packs as standard because that is how bricks leave the works. For small repairs ask anyway: we will tell you honestly whether part packs are possible for the brick you need.

Can I add other materials to my Yate delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from bricks to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.

How soon can bricks be delivered in Yate?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.

Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.
