Tiles and slates arrive palletised and are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; battens and membrane rolls travel with them. Yate is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
• Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
• Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.

Check the minimum pitch

Every tile and slate has a minimum rafter pitch set by the manufacturer. A shallow extension roof may rule some tiles out.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
