Choosing bricks

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.

Matching an existing house

Bring us the brick name if you know it, or a clear photo of a cleaned face in daylight with a tape measure for scale. Size matters as much as colour: older imperial bricks are often slightly larger than 65 mm.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Bristol 10 m long and 1.8 m high: 18 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 1,134 bricks, roughly 3 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 1.06 tonnes of building sand and 10 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

How delivery works in Bristol

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Bristol is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
  • Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
  • Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
