Estimating your bricks

Take a garden wall in Gloucestershire 6 m long and 2.1 m high: 12.6 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 794 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.74 tonnes of building sand and 7 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Delivering bricks in Gloucestershire

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Our standard mainland delivery area covers Gloucestershire.

  • Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.

Before you order bricks

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
