Getting the right MOT Type 1

Virgin or recycled?

Recycled Type 1 can be a good option where it meets the specification; ask what your project or local authority requires.

How deep?

Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.

How much will you need?

A 4 × 6 m area at 150 mm compacted is 3.6 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 8.3 tonnes, or around 10 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator

Delivery to Highbury: what helps

Bulk bags are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; very large quantities can be priced as loose tipped loads where access allows. Highbury is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • On busy streets in Highbury, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
  • If the site is up a shared drive or behind other houses, tell us the distance from the road.

MOT Type 1 Sub-base questions

How much MOT Type 1 do I need?

Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre. At 100 mm deep, a tonne covers roughly 4.5 square metres.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Highbury?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

How deep should a driveway sub-base be?

Around 150 mm of compacted MOT Type 1 is common for domestic drives on firm ground; soft ground or heavier vehicles need more. Follow your installer or the paving maker's guidance.
