Planning the drop in London

Bulk bags are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; very large quantities can be priced as loose tipped loads where access allows. London is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around EC1 are priced to the exact address.
  • Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.

Sizing your order

A 10 × 6 m area at 100 mm compacted is 6 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 13.9 tonnes, or around 17 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator

Things to check before you order

Compaction

Lay and compact in layers with a plate compactor. Allow extra material because it compacts down.

How deep?

Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.

MOT Type 1 Sub-base questions

How much MOT Type 1 do I need?

Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre. At 100 mm deep, a tonne covers roughly 4.5 square metres.

Does Type 1 drain?

Type 1 is reasonably free-draining when compacted, which is one reason it is used under drives and patios.

Do you deliver MOT Type 1 to trades and homeowners in London?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

How soon can MOT Type 1 be delivered in London?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.
