Choosing planed timber

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

Estimating your planed timber

A 4.2 × 4.6 m room with one door has about 16.8 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 18.5 m, or 5 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Before your Liverpool delivery arrives

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. Liverpool is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.
• Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.
• In summer Liverpool gets around 17h 01m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.

Questions about planed timber delivery in Liverpool

Can you deliver planed timber to a site with restricted access in Liverpool?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

Do you sell MDF skirting?

Yes, primed MDF skirting and architrave in common profiles, alongside softwood.

How should I store planed timber?

Flat, off the ground and inside if possible, so it does not take on moisture and move before fitting.

Do you deliver planed timber to trades and homeowners in Liverpool?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.
