Getting the right lintels

Which lintel for my opening?

Measure the clear opening, add the end bearing each side, and note the wall type (cavity width, inner and outer leaf) and what sits above. Manufacturers publish load tables; for anything carrying a floor, roof or point load get an engineer or the council's building standards service to confirm.

Do I need a cavity tray?

Over openings in cavity walls, water in the cavity has to be directed outwards. Many steel lintels need a separate cavity tray and stop ends; check the lintel maker's detail.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

How delivery works in Inverness

Lintels are long, so tell us about tight access. Shorter lintels can travel with a mixed load; long steel lintels are handled by hand or crane. Inverness is in an area where deliveries are priced individually because of the distance and access, so we quote each order separately.

  • If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
  • Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
  • Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.

Working out quantities for your Inverness job

For a 2,700 mm clear opening, add at least 150 mm of bearing at each end: the lintel needs to be at least 3,000 mm long. Then pick the type for the wall build-up and check the load in the manufacturer's table, or ask your engineer if the opening carries a floor or roof.

Ordering lintels for Inverness: FAQs

Can I add other materials to my Inverness delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from lintels to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.

How soon can lintels be delivered in Inverness?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.

Do I need a building warrant for a new lintel?

Making or widening an opening in a loadbearing wall is structural work, so in most cases yes. The council's building standards service or an engineer will confirm the lintel.

Are steel lintels insulated?

Cavity wall steel lintels usually have insulation inside to cut heat loss at the opening. Single-leaf and box lintels may not.
