Before you order lintels
Steel or concrete?
Steel cavity lintels support both leaves and include insulation to limit cold bridging. Concrete lintels are simple and robust for single leaves and internal walls.
Which lintel for my opening?
Measure the clear opening, add the end bearing each side, and note the wall type (cavity width, inner and outer leaf) and what sits above. Manufacturers publish load tables; for anything carrying a floor, roof or point load get an engineer or the council's building standards service to confirm.
In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.
Delivering lintels in Elgin
Lintels are long, so tell us about tight access. Shorter lintels can travel with a mixed load; long steel lintels are handled by hand or crane. Elgin is in an area where deliveries are priced individually because of the distance and access, so we quote each order separately.
- In summer Elgin gets around 18h 05m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
- If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
- Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.
How much will you need?
For a 2,100 mm clear opening, add at least 150 mm of bearing at each end: the lintel needs to be at least 2,400 mm long. Then pick the type for the wall build-up and check the load in the manufacturer's table, or ask your engineer if the opening carries a floor or roof.
Your questions answered
What is a padstone for?
It spreads a concentrated load, such as the end of a beam, over a larger area of masonry so the blocks or bricks underneath are not crushed.
Can you deliver lintels to a site with restricted access in Elgin?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
Can you tell me which lintel to use?
We can suggest options from the manufacturers' load tables based on the opening, wall type and load you describe, but for anything structural the final choice should come from your designer or engineer, and be approved through the council's building standards service.
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Elgin?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
