A lintel is a beam that carries the masonry over a door or window opening; most UK houses use galvanised steel cavity lintels or prestressed concrete lintels.

Our lintels range for Greenock jobs

  • Single-leaf and box lintelsFor solid walls, timber frame and internal walls.
  • Steel cavity wall lintelsInsulated galvanised lintels that support both leaves of a cavity wall.
  • PadstonesConcrete pads that spread the load at the ends of beams and lintels.
  • Heavy-duty and extra-heavy lintelsFor openings carrying floors or a lot of masonry.

Picking the right product

Do I need a cavity tray?

Over openings in cavity walls, water in the cavity has to be directed outwards. Many steel lintels need a separate cavity tray and stop ends; check the lintel maker's detail.

Steel or concrete?

Steel cavity lintels support both leaves and include insulation to limit cold bridging. Concrete lintels are simple and robust for single leaves and internal walls.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Getting lintels onto your Greenock site

Lintels are long, so tell us about tight access. Shorter lintels can travel with a mixed load; long steel lintels are handled by hand or crane. Greenock is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • In summer Greenock gets around 17h 36m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
  • Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.

Sizing your order

For a 1,050 mm clear opening, add at least 150 mm of bearing at each end: the lintel needs to be at least 1,350 mm long. Then pick the type for the wall build-up and check the load in the manufacturer's table, or ask your engineer if the opening carries a floor or roof.

Questions about lintels delivery in Greenock

What is a padstone for?

It spreads a concentrated load, such as the end of a beam, over a larger area of masonry so the blocks or bricks underneath are not crushed.

Do you deliver lintels to trades and homeowners in Greenock?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

How long should a lintel be?

The clear opening plus the end bearing at each side, typically at least 150 mm per end. Check the manufacturer's table for your lintel.

How soon can lintels be delivered in Greenock?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.
