Sizing your order
For a 900 mm clear opening, add at least 150 mm of bearing at each end: the lintel needs to be at least 1,200 mm long. Then pick the type for the wall build-up and check the load in the manufacturer's table, or ask your engineer if the opening carries a floor or roof.
Choosing lintels
Which lintel for my opening?
Measure the clear opening, add the end bearing each side, and note the wall type (cavity width, inner and outer leaf) and what sits above. Manufacturers publish load tables; for anything carrying a floor, roof or point load get an engineer or the council's building standards service to confirm.
Do I need a cavity tray?
Over openings in cavity walls, water in the cavity has to be directed outwards. Many steel lintels need a separate cavity tray and stop ends; check the lintel maker's detail.
In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.
Getting lintels onto your Helensburgh site
Lintels are long, so tell us about tight access. Shorter lintels can travel with a mixed load; long steel lintels are handled by hand or crane. Helensburgh is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
- Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
- On busy streets in Helensburgh, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
Questions about lintels delivery in Helensburgh
Do I need a building warrant for a new lintel?
Making or widening an opening in a loadbearing wall is structural work, so in most cases yes. The council's building standards service or an engineer will confirm the lintel.
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Helensburgh?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
Can I add other materials to my Helensburgh delivery?
Yes. Put everything on one list, from lintels to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
What is a padstone for?
It spreads a concentrated load, such as the end of a beam, over a larger area of masonry so the blocks or bricks underneath are not crushed.
