Choosing PIR insulation boards

Fire considerations

PIR is a combustible product. Building regulations restrict combustible materials in some situations, such as external walls of taller buildings; check what applies.

Thickness for the U-value

The thickness you need depends on the U-value the building regulations require and the rest of the build-up. Manufacturers publish U-value tables; your designer or the council's building standards service will confirm.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Before your Greenock delivery arrives

Boards are light but bulky; they travel in wrapped packs and should be stored flat and dry. Greenock is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
• If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
• With roughly 6h 57m of daylight in Greenock around the shortest day, morning deliveries leave more working light for the job.

A quick quantity check

Insulating 45 m² of rafters, floor or wall takes 17 boards of 2400 × 1200 mm including offcuts. The thickness depends on the U-value you need, so check it before you order. Try the insulation calculator

Ordering PIR insulation boards for Greenock: FAQs

Do you deliver PIR insulation boards to Greenock?

Yes. We deliver across Greenock, including PA15, PA16. Greenock is inside our standard mainland delivery area. Send your list or call 0800 088 6341 and we will price it delivered to your postcode.

Can I add other materials to my Greenock delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from PIR insulation boards to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.

Is PIR better than mineral wool?

PIR insulates more per millimetre, so it suits tight spaces. Mineral wool is non-combustible, cheaper per square metre and better for sound.

How many PIR boards do I need?

Divide the area by 2.88 m² (one 2400 × 1200 board) and add about 5 to 10 percent for cutting.
