Getting the right CLS timber

Loadbearing walls

If the wall carries load it needs graded timber to a design. Plain CLS is not automatically structural.

Stud spacing

Studs are usually set at 400 mm or 600 mm centres to suit 1200 mm wide plasterboard.

Delivering CLS timber in Canterbury

CLS travels in bundles alongside plasterboard and is easy to hand off at the kerb. Canterbury is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • In summer Canterbury gets around 16h 36m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
  • Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
  • Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.

Your questions answered

What is the difference between CLS and planed timber?

CLS has rounded edges and is sized for studwork; planed all round timber has square edges and comes in many more sizes for joinery and trim.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Canterbury?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

Can CLS be used for loadbearing walls?

Only if it is strength graded and the wall is designed for the load. Ask for graded CLS if your design calls for it.

Can you deliver CLS timber to a site with restricted access in Canterbury?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
