Getting the right PIR insulation boards

Sealing joints

Tape the joints with foil tape so the foil layer works as a continuous vapour control layer where the design relies on it.

Fire considerations

PIR is a combustible product. Building regulations restrict combustible materials in some situations, such as external walls of taller buildings; check what applies.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Working out quantities for your Canterbury job

Insulating 12 m² of rafters, floor or wall takes 5 boards of 2400 × 1200 mm including offcuts. The thickness depends on the U-value you need, so check it before you order. Try the insulation calculator

Getting PIR insulation boards onto your Canterbury site

Boards are light but bulky; they travel in wrapped packs and should be stored flat and dry. Canterbury is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
  • Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around CT1 are priced to the exact address.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.

Your questions answered

Do you deliver PIR insulation boards to trades and homeowners in Canterbury?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

How thick should PIR insulation be?

It depends on where it goes and the U-value required. Pitched roofs often need 100 mm or more between and under rafters; floors and walls vary. Use the maker's U-value tables or ask your designer.

How many PIR boards do I need?

Divide the area by 2.88 m² (one 2400 × 1200 board) and add about 5 to 10 percent for cutting.

Can you deliver PIR insulation boards to a site with restricted access in Canterbury?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
