Choosing bricks

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.

Is the wall exposed?

For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Getting bricks onto your Hampton site

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Hampton is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.
  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.

Working out quantities for your Hampton job

Take a garden wall in Hampton 7 m long and 1.8 m high: 12.6 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 794 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.74 tonnes of building sand and 7 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Common questions from Hampton

Do you deliver bricks to Hampton?

Yes. We deliver across Hampton, including TW12, TW13, TW11, TW1. Hampton is inside our standard mainland delivery area. Send your list or call 0800 088 6341 and we will price it delivered to your postcode.

Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.

Can you match my existing bricks?

Often, yes. Send the brick name if you have it, or a daylight photo of a clean face with a tape measure for scale. We will look for the nearest match in current ranges and can usually arrange a sample before you commit to a full order.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Hampton?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
