Joist Hangers & Timber Connectors

Timber connectors are galvanised steel brackets that join and restrain structural timber, such as joist hangers that carry joists off a wall or beam and restraint straps that tie floors and roofs to walls.

We supply masonry and timber-to-timber joist hangers, lateral restraint straps, truss clips, framing anchors and angle brackets, with the square-twisted nails and screws they need.

Choosing joist hangers and timber connectors

Match the joist size

Hangers are sized to the joist width and depth. Order to your timber schedule.

Use the right nails

Connectors only perform with the fixings specified, usually square-twisted or connector nails in every hole the maker requires.

Restraint straps

Building regulations require lateral restraint in many situations; your design shows where.

Building regulations differ across the UK. In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver. Wales has its own Approved Documents, including its own Part L for energy efficiency, and building control is handled by the local authority or a registered approver. In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks. In Northern Ireland building work follows the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland), with guidance in the Technical Booklets, and applications go to the council's building control team.

How it arrives on site

Boxed or bundled with your timber. We agree the drop point and offload method when we price your order. Read more about how delivery works.

How much do you need?

A floor 4.2 m wide with joists at 400 mm centres has 12 joists; hung off a wall at one end that is 12 joist hangers, plus restraint straps at the spacing your design shows.

Joist Hangers & Timber Connectors: questions

What size joist hanger do I need?

One that matches your joist's width and depth, and the type of support: masonry or timber.

Do I nail every hole in a joist hanger?

Follow the maker's instructions; many hangers need specific nails in specific holes to reach their rated load.

What are restraint straps for?

They tie walls to floors and roofs so the walls are restrained against wind and other sideways loads.

Can I use ordinary nails in hangers?

Use the connector nails or screws specified by the maker, usually square-twisted galvanised nails.

Are hangers suitable outside?

Galvanised hangers suit most sheltered external use; very exposed or coastal locations may need stainless steel.
