Before you order planed timber

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

Working out quantities for your Coalville job

A 3 × 3.6 m room with one door has about 12.4 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 13.6 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Planed Timber & Mouldings questions

Why is my 2 × 4 smaller than 2 × 4 inches?

Timber is often named by its sawn size before planing. Once planed, it finishes smaller, so a nominal 2 × 4 is roughly 44 × 94 mm or less.

Do you deliver planed timber to Coalville?

Yes. We deliver across Coalville, including LE67. Coalville is inside our standard mainland delivery area. Send your list or call 0800 088 6341 and we will price it delivered to your postcode.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Coalville?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

How should I store planed timber?

Flat, off the ground and inside if possible, so it does not take on moisture and move before fitting.
