Things to check before you order

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

How much will you need?

A 4.2 × 4 m room with one door has about 15.6 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 17.2 m, or 5 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. Carnoustie is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
• If the site is up a shared drive or behind other houses, tell us the distance from the road.
• Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
