Picking the right product

Thickness for the U-value

The thickness you need depends on the U-value the building regulations require and the rest of the build-up. Manufacturers publish U-value tables; your designer or the council's building standards service will confirm.

Fire considerations

PIR is a combustible product. Building regulations restrict combustible materials in some situations, such as external walls of taller buildings; check what applies.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Getting PIR insulation boards onto your Oban site

Boards are light but bulky; they travel in wrapped packs and should be stored flat and dry. Oban is in an area where deliveries are priced individually because of the distance and access, so we quote each order separately.

• Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
• Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around PA34 are priced to the exact address.
• Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.

Working out quantities for your Oban job

Insulating 24 m² of rafters, floor or wall takes 9 boards of 2400 × 1200 mm including offcuts. The thickness depends on the U-value you need, so check it before you order. Try the insulation calculator
