Things to check before you order
How deep?
Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.
Compaction
Lay and compact in layers with a plate compactor. Allow extra material because it compacts down.
Planning the drop in Dumfries
Bulk bags are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; very large quantities can be priced as loose tipped loads where access allows. Dumfries is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
- Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around DG1 are priced to the exact address.
- Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
A quick quantity check
An 8 × 3 m area at 150 mm compacted is 3.6 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 8.3 tonnes, or around 10 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator
MOT Type 1 Sub-base questions
Does Type 1 drain?
Type 1 is reasonably free-draining when compacted, which is one reason it is used under drives and patios.
How much MOT Type 1 do I need?
Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre. At 100 mm deep, a tonne covers roughly 4.5 square metres.
Can you deliver MOT Type 1 to a site with restricted access in Dumfries?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
Can I add other materials to my Dumfries delivery?
Yes. Put everything on one list, from MOT Type 1 to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
