Mineral Wool Insulation

Mineral wool is glass or stone fibre insulation supplied as rolls, batts and slabs; it insulates, absorbs sound and most products are non-combustible.

We supply loft rolls, cavity wall batts, partition rolls and acoustic slabs in glass and stone wool, for lofts, walls, floors and partitions.

Choosing mineral wool insulation

How much for a loft?

The common recommendation is 270 mm in total: usually 100 mm between the joists and 170 mm across them. Check the depth already there.

Glass or stone wool?

Glass wool rolls are light and economical for lofts. Stone wool slabs are denser and often chosen for acoustics and fire stopping.

Keep it ventilated

When insulating a loft, keep eaves vents clear so the roof space stays ventilated.

Building regulations differ across the UK. In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver. Wales has its own Approved Documents, including its own Part L for energy efficiency, and building control is handled by the local authority or a registered approver. In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks. In Northern Ireland building work follows the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland), with guidance in the Technical Booklets, and applications go to the council's building control team.

How it arrives on site

Rolls are compressed and wrapped; they are light but take up space, so tell us if storage is tight. We agree the drop point and offload method when we price your order. Read more about how delivery works.

How much do you need?

An 8 × 6 m loft (48 m²) insulated from scratch to 270 mm needs about 6 rolls of 100 mm and 10 rolls of 170 mm, using typical roll coverage; coverage varies by brand. Try the insulation calculator

Mineral Wool Insulation: questions

How thick should loft insulation be?

270 mm in total is the common recommendation, usually as 100 mm between the joists and 170 mm across them.

How many rolls do I need for my loft?

Divide the loft floor area by the coverage printed on the roll, for each layer. Coverage varies by brand and thickness; a 100 mm roll typically covers around 8 m² and a 170 mm roll around 5 m².

Is mineral wool fireproof?

Most mineral wool is rated Euroclass A1 or A2, which means non-combustible or of very limited combustibility.

Does mineral wool help with sound?

Yes. Acoustic rolls and slabs in stud walls and floors reduce sound passing between rooms.

Do I need protective gear?

Wear gloves, long sleeves and a dust mask when handling mineral wool, as it can irritate skin and eyes.
