Order lintels for delivery in Southampton

A lintel is a beam that carries the masonry over a door or window opening; most UK houses use galvanised steel cavity lintels or prestressed concrete lintels.

From SO15 to SO17, we price lintels delivered to Southampton and confirm the drop point and date when you order.

Delivery to Southampton: what helps

Lintels are long, so tell us about tight access. Shorter lintels can travel with a mixed load; long steel lintels are handled by hand or crane. Southampton is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • On busy streets in Southampton, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
  • Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.

Quantities: a worked example

For a 2,400 mm clear opening, add at least 150 mm of bearing at each end: the lintel needs to be at least 2,700 mm long. Then pick the type for the wall build-up and check the load in the manufacturer's table, or ask your engineer if the opening carries a floor or roof.

Choosing lintels

Which lintel for my opening?

Measure the clear opening, add the end bearing each side, and note the wall type (cavity width, inner and outer leaf) and what sits above. Manufacturers publish load tables; for anything carrying a floor, roof or point load get an engineer or building control to confirm.

Steel or concrete?

Steel cavity lintels support both leaves and include insulation to limit cold bridging. Concrete lintels are simple and robust for single leaves and internal walls.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Steel & Concrete Lintels in Southampton: questions

Do you deliver lintels to trades and homeowners in Southampton?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

Do I need building control approval for a new lintel?

Making or widening an opening in a loadbearing wall is structural work, so in most cases yes. Building control or an engineer will confirm the lintel.

What is a padstone for?

It spreads a concentrated load, such as the end of a beam, over a larger area of masonry so the blocks or bricks underneath are not crushed.

Can you deliver lintels to a site with restricted access in Southampton?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
