Picking the right product

Colour of mortar

Building sand colour changes the mortar colour. For matching existing joints, a sample is worth it.

Soft or sharp?

Use soft building sand for mortar because it gives a smooth, sticky mix. Use sharp sand where strength and drainage matter: screeds, concrete and paving beds.

How delivery works in Derby

Bulk bags are usually crane-lifted onto a drive or kerb where the vehicle and access allow; small bags travel with a mixed load. Derby is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • In summer Derby gets around 16h 55m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around DE1 are priced to the exact address.

How much will you need?

A 10 m² floor screed at 65 mm is 0.65 m³: about 1.04 tonnes of sharp sand at a 1:4 mix, or 2 bulk bags at around 850 kg each, plus the cement. Try the sand calculator

Building & Sharp Sand questions

How much sand per 1,000 bricks?

Roughly 1 tonne of soft building sand at a 1:4 mortar mix.

Can you deliver sand to a site with restricted access in Derby?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

Can I add other materials to my Derby delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from sand to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.

What is the difference between building sand and sharp sand?

Building (soft) sand is fine and makes smooth mortar for laying bricks. Sharp sand is coarser, drains better and is used in concrete, screeds and paving beds.
