Choosing bricks

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.

Is the wall exposed?

For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Nottingham 7 m long and 1.5 m high: 10.5 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 662 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.62 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Planning the drop in Nottingham

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Nottingham is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
  • If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.

Ordering bricks for Nottingham: FAQs

Can you deliver bricks to a site with restricted access in Nottingham?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

How much mortar do 1,000 bricks need?

Roughly half a cubic metre of mixed mortar, which is about 1 tonne of building sand and 8 to 9 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Our brick calculator works it out for your wall.

Do you deliver bricks to trades and homeowners in Nottingham?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.
