Choosing bricks
Engineering Class A or B?
Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.
Is the wall exposed?
For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).
In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
Getting bricks onto your Lincoln site
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Lincoln is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
- Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
- On busy streets in Lincoln, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
