Which bricks can you order in Inverness?

  • Engineering bricks, Class A and BDense, low-absorption bricks for below DPC, inspection chambers and retaining walls.
  • Common bricksPlain bricks for internal or hidden walls where looks do not matter.
  • Special shapesBullnose, cant, coping and plinth bricks to finish sills, piers and wall tops.

Choosing bricks

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or the council's building standards service may specify one.

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Planning the drop in Inverness

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Inverness is in an area where deliveries are priced individually because of the distance and access, so we quote each order separately.

  • If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around IV2 are priced to the exact address.

Working out quantities for your Inverness job

Take a garden wall in Inverness 4 m long and 1.5 m high: 6 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 378 bricks, roughly 1 pack of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.35 tonnes of building sand and 4 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Bricks questions

How many bricks are in a square metre?

With standard 215 × 65 mm bricks and 10 mm mortar joints you need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall and about 120 for a one-brick-thick wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts and breakages.

How much mortar do 1,000 bricks need?

Roughly half a cubic metre of mixed mortar, which is about 1 tonne of building sand and 8 to 9 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Our brick calculator works it out for your wall.

Can you deliver bricks to a site with restricted access in Inverness?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

Can I add other materials to my Inverness delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from bricks to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
