Getting bricks onto your Forres site
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Forres is in an area where deliveries are priced individually because of the distance and access, so we quote each order separately.
- Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
- Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.
- Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.
How much will you need?
Take a garden wall in Forres 10 m long and 1.05 m high: 10.5 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 662 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.62 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
Choosing bricks
Colour consistency
Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.
Is the wall exposed?
For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).
In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.
Your questions answered
Can you deliver bricks to a site with restricted access in Forres?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Forres?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
How many bricks are in a square metre?
With standard 215 × 65 mm bricks and 10 mm mortar joints you need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall and about 120 for a one-brick-thick wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts and breakages.
How many bricks come in a pack?
It depends on the manufacturer and the brick. Packs of 400, 475 and 500 are common. We confirm the pack size with your price so you can order whole packs.
