Bricks: choosing well
Colour consistency
Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.
Is the wall exposed?
For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).
Wales has its own Approved Documents, including its own Part L for energy efficiency, and building control is handled by the local authority or a registered approver.
Estimating your bricks
Take a garden wall in Aberdare 4 m long and 1.2 m high: 4.8 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 303 bricks, roughly 1 pack of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.28 tonnes of building sand and 3 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
Delivery to Aberdare: what helps
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Aberdare is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
- If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
- Deliveries are to the kerb, drive or within crane reach; ask if materials need to go further.
Common questions from Aberdare
How much mortar do 1,000 bricks need?
Roughly half a cubic metre of mixed mortar, which is about 1 tonne of building sand and 8 to 9 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Our brick calculator works it out for your wall.
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Aberdare?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
Can you deliver bricks to a site with restricted access in Aberdare?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
How many bricks are in a square metre?
With standard 215 × 65 mm bricks and 10 mm mortar joints you need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall and about 120 for a one-brick-thick wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts and breakages.
