Roofing Materials: choosing well

Fixing requirements

BS 5534 sets out how tiles must be fixed against wind uplift, which in most cases means every tile is mechanically fixed. Ask for the fixing specification with your tiles.

Check the minimum pitch

Every tile and slate has a minimum rafter pitch set by the manufacturer. A shallow extension roof may rule some tiles out.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Sizing your order

A 30 m² roof slope needs roughly 300 large-format interlocking tiles, or about 1,800 small plain tiles, before ridge, hip and verge pieces. The exact count comes from the tile's gauge, so send us the roof measurements and pitch and we will work it out with the battens and membrane.

Delivery to Richmond: what helps

Tiles and slates arrive palletised and are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; battens and membrane rolls travel with them. Richmond is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
  • Deliveries are to the kerb, drive or within crane reach; ask if materials need to go further.
  • If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.

Your questions answered

How soon can roofing materials be delivered in Richmond?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.

Do you deliver roofing materials to Richmond?

Yes. We deliver across Richmond, including TW9, TW10, TW1, TW2. Richmond is inside our standard mainland delivery area. Send your list or call 0800 088 6341 and we will price it delivered to your postcode.

What battens should I use?

Roofing battens graded for roofing work, of the size the tile maker and BS 5534 call for, normally treated.

Do I need a breathable membrane?

Most new pitched roofs use a breathable (vapour-permeable) underlay, which helps control condensation in the roof space. Some designs use a non-breathable underlay with ventilation instead.
