Choosing planed timber

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

A quick quantity check

A 3 × 3.6 m room with one door has about 12.4 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 13.6 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Before your Pitsea delivery arrives

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. Pitsea is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
• In summer Pitsea gets around 16h 39m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
• Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.

Questions about planed timber delivery in Pitsea

Can you match an old skirting profile?

We can look for the closest current profile. Exact matches for old or bespoke profiles may need machining to order.

Do you deliver planed timber to trades and homeowners in Pitsea?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Pitsea?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

What does PAR mean?

Planed all round: the timber has been machined smooth on all four faces.
