Quantities: a worked example

A 3.8 × 3.2 m room with one door has about 13.2 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 14.5 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Before you order planed timber

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

Planning the drop in Penarth

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. Penarth is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
• In summer Penarth gets around 16h 38m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
• On busy streets in Penarth, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.

Ordering planed timber for Penarth: FAQs

What does PAR mean?

Planed all round: the timber has been machined smooth on all four faces.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Penarth?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

Can you deliver planed timber to a site with restricted access in Penarth?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

How should I store planed timber?

Flat, off the ground and inside if possible, so it does not take on moisture and move before fitting.
