Planed Timber & Mouldings: choosing well

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Delivery to Cheadle Hulme: what helps

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. Cheadle Hulme is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
• Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
• On busy streets in Cheadle Hulme, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.

A quick quantity check

A 3.4 × 4 m room with one door has about 14 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 15.4 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.
