Choosing planed timber

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Planning the drop in Annan

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. Annan is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• In summer Annan gets around 17h 22m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
• For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
• If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.

How much will you need?

A 3.8 × 4.6 m room with one door has about 16 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 17.6 m, or 5 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.
