Things to check before you order

Fire considerations

PIR is a combustible product. Building regulations restrict combustible materials in some situations, such as external walls of taller buildings; check what applies.

Thickness for the U-value

The thickness you need depends on the U-value the building regulations require and the rest of the build-up. Manufacturers publish U-value tables; your designer or the council's building standards service will confirm.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Estimating your PIR insulation boards

Insulating 12 m² of rafters, floor or wall takes 5 boards of 2400 × 1200 mm including offcuts. The thickness depends on the U-value you need, so check it before you order. Try the insulation calculator

Planning the drop in Thurso

Boards are light but bulky; they travel in wrapped packs and should be stored flat and dry. Thurso is in an area where deliveries are priced individually because of the distance and access, so we quote each order separately.

• Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.
• If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
• Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.

Ordering PIR insulation boards for Thurso: FAQs

How many PIR boards do I need?

Divide the area by 2.88 m² (one 2400 × 1200 board) and add about 5 to 10 percent for cutting.

What is the foil for?

The foil facing reflects heat, protects the foam and, when joints are taped, can act as a vapour control layer.

Do you deliver PIR insulation boards to trades and homeowners in Thurso?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.
