Before you order MOT Type 1

Compaction

Lay and compact in layers with a plate compactor. Allow extra material because it compacts down.

How deep?

Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.

Planning the drop in Shirley

Bulk bags are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; very large quantities can be priced as loose tipped loads where access allows. Shirley is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
  • Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
  • Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.

A quick quantity check

A 10 × 3 m area at 150 mm compacted is 4.5 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 10.4 tonnes, or around 13 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator

MOT Type 1 Sub-base in Shirley: questions

Can you tip it loose?

For larger quantities we can price a loose tipped load if the lorry can reach and there is space to tip.

Do you deliver MOT Type 1 to trades and homeowners in Shirley?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

How much MOT Type 1 do I need?

Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre. At 100 mm deep, a tonne covers roughly 4.5 square metres.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Shirley?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
