Working out quantities for your Dumfries and Galloway job

A floor 3 m wide with joists spanning 3.3 m at 400 mm centres needs 9 joists, plus trimmers and noggins. The section and grade, such as 47 × 200 mm C24, come from span tables or your engineer; send us the timber schedule and we will price it.

Before your Dumfries and Galloway delivery arrives

Timber is delivered in packs or bundles on a flatbed; long lengths need clear access along the drop point. Our standard mainland delivery area covers Dumfries and Galloway.

  • Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
  • If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
  • Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.

Treated Carcassing Timber: choosing well

C16 or C24?

C24 is stronger and stiffer, so it can span further or use a smaller section. Span tables and your structural drawings decide which grade and size you need.

Which treatment?

Treatment is specified by use class. Timber inside a building is usually use class 1 or 2; external timber out of ground contact is use class 3; timber in ground contact needs use class 4.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.
