Choosing sand

Covering bulk bags

Cover bags to stop sand drying out or getting saturated, and keep it clean of debris.

Soft or sharp?

Use soft building sand for mortar because it gives a smooth, sticky mix. Use sharp sand where strength and drainage matter: screeds, concrete and paving beds.

How much will you need?

A 15 m² floor screed at 65 mm is 0.98 m³: about 1.56 tonnes of sharp sand at a 1:4 mix, or 2 bulk bags at around 850 kg each, plus the cement. Try the sand calculator

How delivery works in Chiswick

Bulk bags are usually crane-lifted onto a drive or kerb where the vehicle and access allow; small bags travel with a mixed load. Chiswick is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • If the site is up a shared drive or behind other houses, tell us the distance from the road.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
  • Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.

Building & Sharp Sand in Chiswick: questions

How much sand per 1,000 bricks?

Roughly 1 tonne of soft building sand at a 1:4 mortar mix.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Chiswick?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

How much sand do I need for a screed?

Multiply the floor area by the screed depth to get cubic metres, then allow about 1.6 tonnes of sharp sand per cubic metre plus cement at your mix. Our sand calculator does the sums.

Can I add other materials to my Chiswick delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from sand to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
