Picking the right product
Soft or sharp?
Use soft building sand for mortar because it gives a smooth, sticky mix. Use sharp sand where strength and drainage matter: screeds, concrete and paving beds.
Colour of mortar
Building sand colour changes the mortar colour. For matching existing joints, a sample is worth it.
Getting sand onto your Cambridge site
Bulk bags are usually crane-lifted onto a drive or kerb where the vehicle and access allow; small bags travel with a mixed load. Cambridge is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- If the site is up a shared drive or behind other houses, tell us the distance from the road.
- In summer Cambridge gets around 16h 46m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
- Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around CB2 are priced to the exact address.
Estimating your sand
A 10 m² floor screed at 65 mm is 0.65 m³: about 1.04 tonnes of sharp sand at a 1:4 mix, or 2 bulk bags at around 850 kg each, plus the cement. Try the sand calculator
Ordering sand for Cambridge: FAQs
Can I add other materials to my Cambridge delivery?
Yes. Put everything on one list, from sand to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
What is the difference between building sand and sharp sand?
Building (soft) sand is fine and makes smooth mortar for laying bricks. Sharp sand is coarser, drains better and is used in concrete, screeds and paving beds.
Can bulk bags go on my drive?
Yes, if the crane can reach and the drive can take the weight. Tell us about any block paving or soft ground.
Can you deliver sand to a site with restricted access in Cambridge?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
