Choosing bricks
Colour consistency
Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.
Is the wall exposed?
For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).
In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
How much will you need?
Take a garden wall in Sandown 7 m long and 1.5 m high: 10.5 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 662 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.62 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
Delivery to Sandown: what helps
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Sandown needs a ferry crossing, so deliveries are quoted individually with the crossing included.
- With roughly 7h 58m of daylight in Sandown around the shortest day, morning deliveries leave more working light for the job.
- If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
- Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.
Bricks questions
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Sandown?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?
Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.
How much mortar do 1,000 bricks need?
Roughly half a cubic metre of mixed mortar, which is about 1 tonne of building sand and 8 to 9 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Our brick calculator works it out for your wall.
Can you deliver bricks to a site with restricted access in Sandown?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
