Bricks: choosing well

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Before your Rayleigh delivery arrives

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Rayleigh is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • In summer Rayleigh gets around 16h 39m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • With roughly 7h 49m of daylight in Rayleigh around the shortest day, morning deliveries leave more working light for the job.

How much will you need?

Take a garden wall in Rayleigh 8 m long and 1.5 m high: 12 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 756 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.71 tonnes of building sand and 7 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Bricks in Rayleigh: questions

How soon can bricks be delivered in Rayleigh?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.

How many bricks come in a pack?

It depends on the manufacturer and the brick. Packs of 400, 475 and 500 are common. We confirm the pack size with your price so you can order whole packs.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Rayleigh?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.
