Getting the right bricks

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or the council's building standards service may specify one.

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

A quick quantity check

Take a garden wall in Glasgow 7 m long and 1.05 m high: 7.35 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 464 bricks, roughly 1 pack of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.43 tonnes of building sand and 4 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Before your Glasgow delivery arrives

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Glasgow is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • On busy streets in Glasgow, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
  • Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
  • If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.

Bricks questions

Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.

Can you deliver bricks to a site with restricted access in Glasgow?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

Do you sell bricks in small quantities?

We price whole packs as standard because that is how bricks leave the works. For small repairs ask anyway: we will tell you honestly whether part packs are possible for the brick you need.

Can I add other materials to my Glasgow delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from bricks to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
